EXECUTIVE WATCH PERSPECTIVE

I recently had the opportunity to interview a very impressive and seasoned professional who had an unusual career track record--he had worked for only one institution since receiving his undergraduate degree. I was amazed. I hadn't seen one of these recently. He grew up through the ranks, eventually attained a senior-leadership position within the company and is now extremely well-compensated. I asked him why he was considering a switch, and he said he really wasn't, but he wants to keep a pulse on the market. This is a rare individual indeed in an industry where three-to-five-year moves are the norm and long-term tenure actually tags someone as too institutional. Recruiters and hiring managers alike look for the professional who makes moves to diversify experience, take on new challenges and step up the ladder. Changing jobs is good for a career (I've made a few in my time) and in the search business, we look for individuals who work their career with a variety of strategic changes. However, 25 years in a dynamic organization noted for a focus on career development of its professionals? Well, that ain't bad either.
