EXECUTIVE WATCH PERSPECTIVE

At the back end of a recruiting process looms the need for the employer (or the employer's representative, typically an executive-search firm) to conduct reference checks on finalists. Candidates at all levels, from CEO to staff people, are impacted critically by the results of references and other background checks. (These may include employment records and financial and criminal background as well as motor-vehicle records). References can make or break a candidacy, so care is key in compiling a reference list. How the reference call is handled can have a huge impact on the results. If they're hard to reach, for instance, it doesn't say good things about their support for you. In addition, in today's litigious environment, many employers have a policy of providing only "official information." However, it's a very round world, and a savvy employer will know the ropes and manage to dig into a candidate's past to get the goods he or she needs.
