EXECUTIVE WATCH PERSPECTIVE

The dark, dreary and slushy days of winter are winding down, and most of us are beginning to daydream about time away from the daily grind in a nice sunny spot. This sounds idyllic, but the problem is, according to recent data, American workers fail to use about a third of their allotted vacation time. As reported in a New York Times article, citing a 2006 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, we use our time increasingly in short spurts of a week or less. To make matters worse, a third of the employees responding to the survey said they have their laptops in tow and their Blackberry's securely fastened to their belts. More often than not, in the course of negotiating compensation packages for candidates, the question of vacation tends to be a relatively small issue. While candidates want to be assured they will receive an appropriate amount of vacation, they often admit (with a bit of bravado) that they "never take it all." With the promise of new technology to keep us even more "in touch," this unfortunate, and unhealthy, trend will probably only worsen.
