No Time to Lose
By Anthony J. LoPinto

I hate to lose time, and most of us have no time to lose. But this week, a valuable hour will be lost. Last year, Congress made a momentous decision; they voted to extend Daylight Savings Time, allowing us to "spring ahead" sooner and "fall back" later. The objective was to save energy costs (as Ben Franklin had originally intended). In 2006, the Indiana State legislature voted to put the whole state on DST (apparently only part of the state had historically observed it), providing the University of Southern California with an opportunity to study the energy-consumption cost differential in the counties that had previously not observed DST. The results were clear: the switch cost Indiana households an additional $8.6 million. In addition, the bureaucrats also screwed up billions of computers, Blackberrys and other critical instruments that were programmed to adjust automatically. So, on Sunday morning we will lose an hour and many of us will have some reprogramming headaches to boot. I guess I'll get up an hour earlier to stay on track next week.
